Sensible Sensimilla: Sip, Sip, Pass.

Last Month, “Yerba con cannabis” began sales by the kilo in Uruguay. The concoction is being sold by a brand most recognized for its yummy Mexican hot chocolate, Abuelita. And no, you will not get high drinking it. The CBD-infused tea costs between $210 and $220 pesos (or $11.10 to $11.63).

Yerba Mate has become a popular tea — especially the types that are carbonated and feature fruity blends. And it’s easy to understand why. Yerba Mate provides a larger energy boost than black tea, and now companies offer vast flavors that quench the meanest sugar-cravings. But the drink in its original form comes from Argentina.

What is Yerba Mate?

The infused drink was first consumed by the Guarani people before it became a South American staple. Mate eventually made its way across the world to Syria and Lebanon, where it became a local tradition. It would seem all who tried mate would end up loving it!

Like other tea ceremonies, yerba mate uses specific tools, but you won’t need a porcelain set or sugar bowl. There are only two main components to drinking Mate: a Gourd and Bombilla.

Gourd

A traditional cup used to drink Mate. Gourds are typically made with a leather exterior, a metal rim for the opening, and are handless.

Bombilla

A metal straw with a filter at the end.

The “Puff-Puff-Pass” of Tea

Drinking yerba mate is really the best when it is a shared experience. Traditionally, everyone in the room drinks from one cup and straw. The loose leaf blend is placed into the goard then filled with hot water. The bombilla is placed inside and the cup is passed around.

Since yerba mate is such a hit around the globe, I’m sure you’re curious as well. Here’s how you can have your very own THC infused Mate:

Time to Brew Some Buds (and Tea)

First things first: weed. This recipe infuses THC into the Yerba Mate to provide the traditional “high” feeling, but you could opt for a CBD option instead.

For personal use, I decarboxylate about as much as I would smoke in a blunt, which is 1.5 grams. If you’re drinking your yerba mate solo, use a ½ gram of the decarboxylated flower. Drinking with a few buds? Use the whole 1.5 grams since you’ll be sharing.

Also, keep in mind that edibles take longer to produce effects, so don’t grow impatient when at first all you have is a caffeine buzz.

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 240 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Break apart or grind your buds
  3. Spread the cannabis on a baking sheet and place it in the oven.
  4. After 45 minutes, the cannabis should be lightly browned and decarboxylated.
